How to apply to the residency program

Application information

Thank you for your interest in the Medical College of Wisconsin's Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery participates in the Graduate Year I training program with five positions in the PG-I classification. This program is designated under the heading of the Medical College of Wisconsin Orthopaedic Surgery Program (Program ID #2605621037). The Graduate Year I is planned and sponsored by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and includes experience that will prepare the candidate for Year II of the Orthopaedic Residency Program. The Residency continues as a four year program of intense orthopaedic training in multiple hospital affiliates of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Candidates who already have completed Graduate Year I training in other authorized programs which are affiliated with orthopaedics will be considered for our Graduate Year I.

Candidates who wish to apply to our program may do so only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  For more information regarding ERAS and how to apply, please contact your Dean's office or the ERAS Web site.

Application deadline: The application process will remain open until the Dean's letter is transmitted to us by ERAS in November. We reserve the right to stop accepting applications any time after the Dean's Letters have arrived.

The materials required for complete application via ERAS are:

  • Common application form
  • Medical school transcript(s)
  • Dean's letter
  • Personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation (one from an orthopaedic surgeon)
  • USMLE transcript
  • Photo (used only for identification following interview)

A personal interview with members of the Residency Selection Committee is mandatory. These interviews are arranged by invitation only at the discretion of the Department Chairman. Following an invitation to interview, you will be requested to submit a curriculum vitae.

All communications during the application and interview process between the applicant and the program director or academic coordinator will be by e-mail. Therefore, you must have a valid e-mail address listed in your ERAS application.
