Participants Sought for Study of Reading Development & Dyslexia
Feb. 22 - Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin are studying how the brain processes speech sounds in children with and without reading difficulties in order get a better understanding of the processing problems that may underlie dyslexia. The ongoing study, funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, is seeking children and adolescents between the ages of 8 and 17 with dyslexia as well as children with no learning problems.
Book Probes Effects of Anesthesia on Memory & Consciousness
Feb 17 - Anthony Hudetz, DBM, PhD, professor of anesthesiology, physiology and biophysics, co-edited a book, Suppressing the Mind: Anesthetic Modulation of Memory and Consciousness, which was recently published by Humana Press.
Hormone to Reduce Brain Damage Studied
Feb 16 - Research to study the effectiveness of the hormone progesterone in reducing brain damage in patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury in Milwaukee County, called the ProTECT III Trial, recently underwent successful community consultation. The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of 17 centers in the country participating in the study.
$1M Grant to Study Multidrug Resistance
Feb 15 - Multidrug resistance is a serious problem in medicine, not only in the often futile treatment of infectious diseases, but also the treatment of cancer patients. The Medical College of Wisconsin received a four-year, $1 million continuation grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of General Medical Sciences to study methods for improving the effectiveness of drug treatments, including those for cancer and infectious diseases.
$1.9M Grant to Study Genes Contributing to Kidney Disease
Feb 12 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year $1.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Heart Lung and Blood Institute to research the genetics of how high blood pressure influences the development of kidney disease. The knowledge could be applied to the creation of more effective treatments.
Charity Navigator Rates College Exceptional
Feb 11 - Charity Navigator, America’s leading independent evaluator of charity organizations, has rated The Medical College of Wisconsin highest among all Wisconsin charities assessed. This is the eighth consecutive year that the Medical College received an “exceptional” four-star rating from the New Jersey-based organization.
Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Specialist joins College Faculty
Feb 3 - Vicki L. Anderson, MD, MBA, has been appointed assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at The Medical College of Wisconsin. She is a member of the medical staff of Froedtert Hospital and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, major teaching affiliates of the College. She serves as the departmental director for the Medical College’s spinal cord injury medicine fellowship program.
$700K Triggers for Chronic Pain Grant
Jan 28 - The Medical College of Wisconsin received a five-year, $700,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse to study chronic pain and possible new treatments.
Volunteers Sought for Attention and Speech Perception Study
Jan 28 - Studies have shown cognitive declines in healthy aging in various areas including attention, working memory, and speech communication. Common activities, such as driving a car or carrying on a conversation, require focused attention on a specific task while ignoring distraction or dividing attention between several tasks.
Dr Dean Klinger joins Medical College Faculty
Jan 27 - Dean E. Klinger, MD, has been appointed associate professor of surgery at The Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Klinger practices in the general surgery clinic at Community Memorial Medical Commons in Menomonee Falls and serves on the medical staff at Community Memorial Hospital.
Dr John A Corbett appointed Chair of Biochemistry
Jan 25 - John A. Corbett, PhD, has been appointed chairman and professor of biochemistry at The Medical College of Wisconsin from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. His research interests includes uncovering the mechanisms responsible for diabetes development.
Havens named Director of Women's Health at VA
Jan 22 - Kathryn Klein Havens, MD, has been appointed associate professor of medicine in general internal medicine at The Medical College of Wisconsin and director of the women’s health clinic at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, a major teaching affiliate of the College. Board certified in internal medicine, Dr. Havens specializes in women’s health issues including gynecology, breast health, reproductive health and menopause. She has extensive experience in adolescents at high risk for teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
Cullen Healthy Heart Run/Walk
Jan 18 - The 14th Annual Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Club Run & Walk will be held on Saturday, February 13 at 10 a.m. at Wil-O-Way Recreation Center, 10602 Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa. The event supports heart research at the internationally recognized Cardiovascular Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin. |
