Dr. James T. Ninomiya came to the department in 1993 from Cleveland, Ohio, where he completed a fellowship in adult reconstruction at University Hospital, Case Western Reserve University. His interest in this specialty began when he was a medical student at the University of Vermont College of Medicine. There he was the recipient of a surgical research award and conducted a study titled "Fourier Transformation Infrared Spectroscopy of Antibiotics in Methymethacrylate Bone Cement". Later in 1986, he was awarded a National Research Service Award individual grant to study the biochemistry of non-collagenous bone proteins.

At the State University of New York at Albany, Dr. Ninomiya completed a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1974 and earned his master of science degree in 1976. Prior to attending medical school, from 1977 to 1980, Dr. Ninomiya was an organic chemist involved in the analytical and organic photochemistry of semiconductor manufacturing for IBM Corporation, Essex Junction, Vermont.

Dr. Ninomiya was awarded his doctor of medicine degree by the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, Vermont, in 1985. He stayed there to perform an internship in general surgery, a biochemistry fellowship, and an orthopaedic surgery residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont. Dr. Ninomiya's research interests include the biochemistry and cell biology of bone and the biologic responses to orthopaedic implants.
