Dr. Shi joined the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in 1992 as an assistant professor. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the Fourth Military Medical University in Xian, China. After earning his medical degree in 1973, Dr. Shi continued his academic studies and obtained a Masters Degree and Ph.D. in orthopaedic surgery. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital and then served as an associate professor and Director of Hand Surgery before coming to the United States.

Dr. Shi completed his Hand Surgery Fellowship in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1988 and studied with a hand surgery Scholarship at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery in Louisville, Kentucky in 1992. His clinical interests/research include hand and microsurgery and free tissue transfer coverage, particularly for complicated lower extremity injuries.

Dr. Shi, who in February 2011 was a presenter at the annual AAOS (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons) meeting in San Diego, CA, is a member of the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery.
